How to Thaw a Turkey
Most turkeys need days, not hours, to thaw. Here’s how to plan.

Three Safe Ways to Thaw
In the Refrigerator
BestAllow about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds. Keep it in its wrapper on a tray on the bottom shelf. Once thawed, it keeps 1 to 2 days in the fridge.
In Cold Water
Allow about 30 minutes per pound. Keep it in its wrapper, fully covered in cold tap water, and change the water every 30 minutes. Cook it right away.
In the Microwave
Follow your microwave’s directions for size and power. Cook it right away.
Plan Ahead
Refrigerator Thawing Times
| Turkey Size | Thawing Time |
|---|---|
| 4 to 12 lbs | 1 to 3 days |
| 12 to 16 lbs | 3 to 4 days |
| 16 to 20 lbs | 4 to 5 days |
| 20 to 24 lbs | 5 to 6 days |

Caution
Never Thaw on the Counter
The outside warms into the danger zone (40°F to 140°F) while the inside is still frozen.
Running Late
Short on Time?
You can cook a turkey from frozen. It takes at least 50% longer.
Finish Safely
Cook It to 165°F
Check the thickest part of the breast, the innermost part of the thigh, and the wing. If it’s stuffed, the center of the stuffing must also reach 165°F. Cooking stuffing in a separate dish is safer.
